SS20: Strapped In

It is undeniable that one of the biggest trends this season is the platform sandal. The platform’s origins date back to as early as Ancient Greece, where they were worn by actors on the stage. Over the next 2000 years, the platform took a turn from the middle ages, to the Medici court and onto 18th century China. The platform as we know it today was introduced in the 1930’s by none other than Salvatore Ferragamo, before truly making their mark in the 1970’s, where they are known as being the epitome of the disco scene.

We asked stylist, author and shoe lover Alexandra Fullerton why she thinks the platform is reigning again.

"After several seasons where sharp stilettos ruled, the platform has come back to the catwalk and looks totally fresh again.

"They are the oldest shape of shoe, but still have edge and because of their association with the disco era, they always seem infused with glamour. The Nineties iteration had lo-fi cool too and with that decade back in the spotlight, the platform feels so right. I’m thrilled they are back."

Savanna is a Rupert Sanderson classic, first joining the collection for Resort 2013. Featuring a cross toe and chunky block heel, Savanna is perfect for events where a heel is needed but comfort is also key. She has since been worn by some of the most stylish women in the world, such as Sienna Miller, Clémence Poésy and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Savanna returns for SS20 as part of our Made to Order service.
